How Do You Get Your Auditions?
by Desiree Williams
How do you get your auditions? Agent, friends, or maybe even your own networking? Well, I know I am a hustler, no slacker here, I guarantee that 90% of the auditioning I do is thanks to my own networking. Maybe its by computer, checking out the new local postings, there are several different websites to check each day, or sometimes its just knowing the right people. Its well known that a lot of it is who you know in this business that can make you or break you! Sad but true. (I just witnessed a case this week) It might just be, being in the right place at the right time. God only knows thats happened to a number of superstars.
So you book a job (not through your agent) because you left your business card that has your current headshot on it at the right place. You land an independent film that pays not a lot of money but enough to pay the bills. Do you pay your hard working agent the 10% they deserve or just consider it under the table? Theyll never know right? Let me tell you, if they did ever know they would probably drop you, and be sure every agency in Texas knows how you work. I have met a lot of people through the years that have said "I booked the job, so why should I pay my agent?" Well, they represent you, they send your face and name out several times a day hoping to get you a paying job! Of coarse, Im no talent agency, I just know an actor that was being paid under the table by the advice of the film producer, their agent found out and that actor has never found representation in this area again . Its your choice, but what it boils down to is a matter of trust and integrity. "You either got it or you dont". Theyre a lot of very loyal actors out there who communicate daily with their agents, thats wonderful. You should never burn bridges in this business. Its ironic how the man scrubbing the toilets at your last audition happens to be the next person you are auditioning for in his film. Go figure!! We all have to pay our bills somehow until we are discovered.
Treat others the way you would want to be treated. The more people you know and have a friendship with, the better. It will only help you on down the road.
